Petition summary and background

Hello fellow citizens of Winnfield, Louisiana. I come to you with a common problem, City Of Winnfield utility. I do believe that it is time that I stand up for myself and I hope that others in this town will feel the same. I received my City Of Winnfield utility bill this morning September 29, 2007 and personally I was infuriated. It is unreasonable for the citizens of this friendly town to pay utility bills that keep going higher and higher even though everything that can be done is being done to lower the amount. I understand the purpose of the fuel adjustment amount that is included on my bill but what I don’t understand is why the amount is double the amount of electricity that is used which is going higher and higher each day. I will use myself as an example last month my utility bill was $295.46 last month. I had a very hard time trying to pay that bill by not paying every other bill that I should have paid. I have not paid my rent in over 2 months and am in my home by the grace of God and the good graces of my landlord. I have not paid my gas, Atmos, bill due to the fact that they are now using my deposit to pay for it. I thank God that I recently received food stamps otherwise my family and I would not be eating. I do have a telephone but I am two months behind on that bill so it will be turned off on October 4, 2007. To reduce the bill, I turned off the air conditioner in the morning when I would wake up and left it off during the hottest part of the day and only turned it back on late in the evening to cool my home to sleep. My lights are turned off in all rooms except for one lamp that I leave on to read by. The normal items in a home run constantly which include refrigerator and freezer (in some homes). I only wash clothes twice a week and that is only 3 loads at that time. If at all possible I try to wash clothes only once a week. My utility bill this month was totaled at $468.49. Still the amount goes higher and higher. What is wrong with this picture? A town where people can barely make over minimum wage and let’s not even talk about the people that are on a fixed income, with a utility bill like this old and young people will being dying from heat and starvation. Utilities will be turned off all through town. People will not have alarm clocks to wake them up to go to the non-paying jobs which they will loose because they were late. I hope that everybody that signs this petition is as outraged by this as I am. Please, let us take action as a group of concerned citizens. This has to end somewhere.
